Dec 13, 2019  (Archives) Microsoft Word 2003: Creating Headers and Footers Mac. Last updated Friday, Dec. 13, 2019, at 4:16 p.m. This article is based on legacy software. You can create headers and footers in your Word document so that information such as the author's name, document title, or page numbers will appear in the top and/or bottom margin of your document. Mar 29, 2019 Open the document in Microsoft Word. You can do this by double-clicking the document on your computer. Alternatively, open Microsoft Word first (under All Apps in the Start menu on Windows, or in the Applications folder on macOS), then open the document. Click the cursor at the beginning of the page you want to rotate.

Customize the document headers and footers in Word 2011 for Mac to show page numbers, dates, and logos for formal stationery. You can work with headers and footers in several of Word 2011’s views. The quick way to work with headers and footers is by way of the Header and Footer group on the Office 2011 Ribbon’s Document Elements tab.

Clicking either the Header or Footer button displays a gallery from which you can choose a style for your header or footer. The basic layout of three positions (left, center, and right) is the first style on the palette. Notice that some styles affect only odd-numbered or even-numbered pages. Some of the styles apply tables to the header or footer, so if you click into one of these styles, the Format Tables tab on the Ribbon will activate.

When you choose a header or footer style, Word changes the interface so that you can type in your header or footer. You can display this view by choosing View→Header and Footerwithout having to choose a style from the Ribbon. To work with the interface, simply click into it and type. Click the Page # button on the Ribbon to display the Page Numbers dialog, which you can use to choose alignment and formatting options for your page numbers.

To exit Header and Footer view, choose a view from the views listed in the topmost group of the View menu, or double-click the document body. You can also click the small Close button below the Header or above the Footer area.

You may want to format your Header or Footer to display Page # of #. To make this custom format starting without a Header or Footer style, do the following:

  1. Choose View→Header and Footer from the menu bar.

  2. Click within either the Header or Footer area.

Your cursor will be at the left. Press Tab once or twice to move to the center or right, if desired.

  3. Type the word “Page,” followed by a space.

  4. Choose Insert→Field from the menu bar.

You can create headers and footers in Microsoft Word that repeat the same text at the top or bottom of each page. For example, if you’re typing the minutes of a club meeting, you may want to put the club’s name in the header so that it appears across the top of each page.

Every document has a header and footer area, which are both empty by default. The header and footer appear in Print Layout view, Full Page Reading view, and Web Layout view, and also on the printed page. (If you are in Draft view, you may want to switch to Print Layout view to follow along in this section more easily.)

Here are two ways of putting content into headers and footers:

Mac
  • Manually: In Print Layout view, double-click in the header or footer of the page. (Choose View→Print Layout.) This puts you in the Header and Footer editing mode, where you can type text directly into those areas.

You can’t edit the body of the document while you’re in this mode. To resume working within the main part of the document, double-click the main document (anywhere below the header or above the footer).

  • Have Word help: Choose Insert→Header or Insert→Footer and then select a preformatted header or footer placeholder. This also places you in Header and Footer editing mode automatically, and you can edit the text in the placeholders that were inserted. Depending on the sample you pick, there may be not only a text placeholder but also a page-numbering code. This saves you the step of inserting the page-numbering code separately.

You can manually insert a page-numbering code into a header or footer as well as codes for the current date, time, and other information. When the insertion point is in the header or footer area, the Header & Footer Tools Design tab appears on the Ribbon. On that tab are buttons for inserting various types of codes like that.

In the check boxes in the Options group, you can specify that you want a different header and footer for the first page (for example, so you can have a cover page without header and footer text), or that you want separate headers and footers for odd and even pages (for example, for a double-sided booklet where the page numbers should always be on the outside edge).

Change

In the Position group, you can control the amount of space allotted to the header and footer. By default, each is 1/2-inch tall. You can change these values in the Header from Top and Footer from Bottom list boxes.
